LEADERSHIP VERSUS MANAGEMENT. Part II

“Finally a leader is someone that feature in the future that he has already picture. What that means is that he is visionary. What that also means is that a leader “goes beyond the ordinary to delivery the perceived impossible in the quest for excellence.” WHO ARE YOU? A LEADER, A RULER OR A MANAGER”

This was the last paragraph of the part 1 of Leadership VS Management. Have you sincerely asked yourself who you are? If yes, you must have started having a faint idea who you are and this part 2 will give you a clearer picture and if you need to make amends why not. Read leadership books, read biographies of leaders and what are their strength and weakness and draw inputs from which you can be a better person.

Leadership could also be the art of getting someone else do something you want done because he wants to do it – General Dwight Eisenhower

Some people use to say that a leader is someone that can tell you to go to hell in such a manner that you will be willing to go to the hell.

A leader is full of tact; he is always someone that seeks a new and better way to get something done. He is not dogmatic; he doesn’t take every thing hook line and sinker, a leader believes superior argument should carry the day, a leader will hear another person out, even if the view is senseless or he doesn’t want to believe the person.

A leader is someone was has all the powers to avenge a wrong but refuses to use it, not because he is a weakling, but because he believes that you may not have intentionally done the wrong.

A leader is someone who strengthens those things that binds you together rather than emphasizing on your differences; he wants you to grow

A Manager is someone that preaches Carrot and Stick management approach and he is quick to apply the stick but very hesitant to apply carrot and will find every excuse not to use the carrot.

A leader is s shepherd and like the biblical shepherd he makes use of the rod and the staff because “the rod and the staff they comfort me”

People around a leader are eager to see him, but people around a manager are scared of having him around because they can’t tell what next move will attract a horse wipe.

A manager will take advantage of the paraphernalia of the office he occupies to do things in his favour but a leader will always ask like Late Obafemi Awolowo “qui bono” For whose benefit?

I know all these will not go down well with a lot of people that will read it, but I don’t really care because of the decadence the Managers and Rulers in our society have caused us.

A leader seeks the benefit of others first but for a manager, anything that doesn’t benefit him is not good and if he is in a position to stop it will do it.

A leader studies the peculiarities of all under his span of control and treats them separately and will not expect all to behave in same manner.

A leader commands respect, but a manager demands for respect and he sure will get a lot of eye service respect which are ephemeral.

A leader is a forgiver, he has a large heart to accommodate, he tolerates infact a leader makes allowances for other people’s excesses, he is patient, he is controlled by the Spirit of God in all he does.

When you know and discover who a leader is, you will on your own work towards giving the best to be like him if not even better than him.

Until you have a leader occupy a position, desired success will be short lived if achieved or will be a mirage for ever.

LEADERSHIP vs MANAGEMENT

LEADERSHIP VERSUS MANAGEMENT.

I am excited to drop a few lines about the above subject matter because of the misconception about it that has existed hitherto.

Management is simple terms is ability to harness resources within your disposal to achieve organizational goals and objectives.

In trying to achieve this, you will need to play leadership role at some points and in some instances you will give instruction on things to be done that as a Manager you know clearly may be herculean or practically undoable.

Against this back drop let’s take a look at this:

Management is doing things right, while Leadership is doing the right things. Someone may ask the right things may be relative given a peculiar circumstance. I leave that for us to judge.

Leadership is taking a lead in your field that will make people refer to you. Suffice it to mention therefore that leaders are made/trained and not born or acquired. A leading lawyer is trained and has quiet a number of experiences. A boxer is made by the number of fights he wins. The child of the boxer cannot possibly take his father’s medals and inherit the championship of his father. Same goes for every profession there is on earth.

Leadership is the art of accomplishing more than the science of management says is possible – Colin Powel.

A leader is not voted in to office and appointed, the accomplishment of such a fellow speaks volume and he naturally and undoubtedly functions in that area of endeavour as a leader.

There is a sharp difference also between a leader and a ruler. In our continent of Africa today, and in Nigeria to be precise, we have more rulers than leaders, that is why persons in such positions, which ever name such position go by, requires some kind of effort to command respect. A leader is not self seeking neither is such a person a talkative, his actions are unequivocally obvious that he takes a step that others will naturally follow.

Finally a leader is someone that feature in the future that he has already picture. What that means is that he is visionary. What that also means is that a leader “goes beyond the ordinary to delivery the perceived impossible in the quest for excellence.” WHO ARE YOU? A LEADER, A RULER OR A MANAGER
